Package description

Birdwatching package is aimed at everyone who loves Nature and especially for those who are interested in a checklist for birds of the Amazon. This is all possible in a week of excursion, as the places visited are of relevant ecological importance (hot spot). This excursion combines to explore different ecosystems, from flooded forest to highland in specific regions.

We leave the hotel at 05:00 am and drive across the city of Manaus to the Ducke Reserve (high lands). We are going up a tower on canopy layer for birds such as: macaws, toucan, parrots, trogons, barbets, woodpeckers, cotingas, tanagers, dacnises, honeycreepers and raptors. About 08:00am we are going to eat our breakfast at a regional Café. Right after breakfast we drive by air-conditioning vehicle to access the land of President Figueiredo (116 km north), a region integrated to the conservation units as part of the creation of the first Amazon Biosphere Reserve. This is the region with good varieties of birds and we want to visit an arena of the Guianan Cocks-of-the-rock (Rupicula rupicula). Lunch is served at 12:30 pm, in the afternoon we will take a short walk to reach the arena of the Cocks of the rock as well to explore for other birds. Meals and accommodation at Mari-Mari Lodge!

At 05:00 am we will leave to another area, today we want to explore the uplands to search for birds that inhabits the forest’s low strata. We walk through the jungle for few hours to get closer to the birds found on the trail such as: antwrens, antbirds, manakins, jacamars, puffbirds, nunbirds, curassows, guans, trumpeters, tinamous, etc., so after our activity we will return to the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo for lunch. After lunch we will be heading to the Rio Negro basin to board the regional boat (river cruiser), we still sailing upriver to reach the Ariaú river, which is a small river and excellent place to observe the nocturnal birds. Meals & accommodation in the boat!

We leave at 05:30 am to explore the environment of Várzea (white-water floodplains), by canoe we go through the creeks and flooded vegetation. This ecosystem is an environment with high diversity of habitats and is considered the most species-rich periodic flooded forests in the world (Wittmann et al 2006). We will do a tour for a few hours in search for birds, there is good variety of species to be observed while canoeing through the forest. Breakfast will be served at 09:00 am, right after we navigate towards the Anavilhanas National Park, we are going to explore narrow creeks through the Islands to see different birds and we want to stop for a visit at an arena of Wire-tailed Manakins – Pipra filicauda. Meals and accommodation in the boat!

We leave today at 06:00 am, we are going to explore the Anavilhanas Islands to see the birds. We paddle through the forest in searching for the species that occur on the islands, we will have amazing birds approach. Breakfast will be served at 09:00 am, right after we navigate downstream on the way to the great Amazon river. Cruising and enjoying a lush landscape, we are going towards the biggest interfluve of the Amazon basin and along the way we observe birds such as:  parrots, toucans, macaws and raptors. Regional meals such as: Amazonian fishes, fruits, nuts, will be served by our chef during the excursion. Dinner & Overnight!

At 05:30 am we are going by motorized canoe through the streams and flooded Várzea to reach the Reis lake, this is a lake located on the large island of the Amazon River. We will be looking for birds which are more restricted to the island, like many woodpeckers and woodcreepers. Our Breakfast will be served at 09:00am, after breakfast we are heading to an area of transitional vegetations from Várzea to Terra firm ecosystems. Lunch at 12:00 pm (noon), in the afternoon we are going to navigate by the margins of the main river which is excellent for observing macaws, parrots, toucans, hawks, kites, and plenty of other birds. Regional meals will be served by our chef during the excursion. Dinner & Overnight!

At 05:00 am we leave towards a stream that divides Várzea from Terra firm, in this place we find the rarest birds and we will approach for observation. We are making a reconnaissance of this area, the concentration of species around here is news for our guides, that’s why we didn’t miss the opportunity to explore this place. Breakfast is served at 09:00 am, after breakfast we go again for a short time to explore neighboring region in the Várzea ecosystem. Lunch will be served at 12:00 pm (noon), in the afternoon we are going to explore by canoe entering the streams of the primary forest in the encounter for new birds and we will be until dusk. All meals will be served by our chef during the excursion. Dinner & Overnight!

At 05:30 am we will leave by motorized canoe and head towards a central stream, we will be exploring for approximately two hours. Breakfast will be served at 08:00 am, right after breakfast we start to travel through the meanders of the Amazon river on the way back to Manaus. Drop off at the hotel!
